Martha's ceramics are inspired by tales of her Icelandic grandparents fishing on frozen seas, using stars and birds to guide their way. The mark making on the pots follow the lines of their fishing nets and the migrating birds nod to her seafaring family line.
Born in Yorkshire, Martha grew up between family in the UK and the Canary Islands. After moving south to study her degree in Illustration at Cambridge School of Art, Martha spent 4 years living and drawing in Scotland before moving to New Zealand in 2017 where she began her ceramic practice. Recently returned to Yorkshire, she now spends her days illustrating and making ceramic creations inspired by her ocean-going ancestors, from her studio at the bottom of her terraced garden.
All work is built by hand, without an electric wheel, with each piece being built up slowly using coils, slabs or pinching methods. Shapes may reoccur, but each object will be unique due to the process- these processes leave their mark and often you will find finger prints and wobbles created as the work is formed. These are tactile works, formed from a lump of clay with human hands
Each piece is made by hand on either a foot pedalled wheel or a hand turned banding wheel using ancient techniques and clay sourced within the UK. All clay trimmings and scraps are recycled and repurposed into new works so nothing is wasted, even snapped glaze pencil nibs are ground down and mixed into a paste to paint with onto bisqueware. Martha has recently invested in a new ultra efficient and well insulated kiln which is much better for the environment which and is in her studio at the bottom of the garden, making her walk to work very green indeed.
Each piece is unique but generally all works are glazed internally, making them watertight and safe to display flowers. As the outsides are often matte, please avoid oils/or flowers with strongly pigmented pollens as this could stain lighter pieces. Wash by hand or lightly dust using a soft brush. Bird brooches can be gently hand washed and must always be removed before putting clothes in the washing machine.
