Katie enjoys walking and collects all manner of interesting or beautiful objects, such as feathers, fragments of bird’s eggshells, rocks, pebbles, seaglass and seed heads whilst doing so. Their natural patterns, colours and texture provide inspiration for her collections of ceramic vessels and jewellery which record walks through different landscapes.
Katie throws her British bird eggshell bowls on the wheel using stoneware clay. After they’ve received a first firing, the bowls are dipped into liquid glaze. When this coating of glaze has dried, the eggshell markings are then carefully hand painted onto the surface, before the bowls are fired again for a final time. Similarly, the eggshell markings are hand painted onto the porcelain eggshell jewellery prior to the final high firing.
The hollow rock and pebble vases are hand built using different combinations of clay body recipes and additions. They’re left unglazed to highlight the texture of the clay bodies and the natural colours achieved via the two different firing atmospheres – gas reduction and electric oxidation.
Katie’s ceramics are suitable for dry flowers and dry foods and should be handwashed only.
Katie’s "Gold filled" (or "rolled gold") jewellery comprises a solid layer of 14ct gold permanently bonded to brass. Katie chooses to use “Gold Filled” findings as they are very hard wearing, far more than gold plated jewellery.
