Hannah Souter is a jewellery designer and maker with over twenty years of professional practice, working from her studio in Cambridgeshire.
She graduated in 2002 with a First-Class Honours degree in Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, and Jewellery Design, followed by a postgraduate residency at Bishopsland Workshops in Reading. A strong emphasis on bench skills and material understanding continues to shape her approach to making.
Hannah’s jewellery is handmade in precious metals and driven by a close engagement with process, surface, and form. An early background in textiles informs her sensitivity to texture, pattern, and rhythm, resulting in sculptural yet wearable jewellery that invites touch and close engagement. She employs and adapts techniques including etching and fusing, using technical experimentation to develop rich, tactile surfaces and distinctive finishes.
Alongside her studio practice, teaching has been a long-standing and integral part of her professional life. Hannah teaches 1:1 and 1:2 classes from her studio and runs wedding ring workshops.
Caring for your jewellery:
Satin finish silver and 18ct gold can be cleaned using toothpaste. Hannah suggests Arm & Hammer bicarbonate of soda toothpaste as it is slightly abrasive. Rub a small amount of toothpaste all over the silver with a clean finger and wash thoroughly. This removes the tarnish without affecting the surface finish.
For gilt pieces avoid cleaning with any abrasives.
For oxidised pieces, cleaning with warm water and a little washing up liquid will remove any grease or finger prints without affecting the oxidised finish.
Hannah does not recommend using a silver dip or silver cloths impregnated with polish for any of her pieces.
