I was born in Cambridgeshire, and returned to live and work here about 8 years ago. I am a Fine Artist, and studied Fine Art at The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford University, graduating with honors in 1998. I concentrate mostly on painting and drawing, but use other processes to explore and develop ideas. My paintings frequently use a mixture of different media, including acrylic paint, oil paint and fabric
The brooches came out of an idea to play with scale: to explore miniaturisation of my imagery. I have been working with domestic themes and had been concentrating on the contents of my home. The miniatures seemed to invite an exploration of the garden - the wildlife, foliage, flowers and creatures on the edges of my house; so much of which is familiar to me from growing up in the Cambridgeshire countryside.
My paintings often contain objects and references to stories and ideas that explore the rituals and personalities of our private and public lives. The brooches seem to work well in this concept. I like to watch people choosing the design that best describes who they feel themselves to be – reading meaning and personality into the miniature paintings. In this way, the brooches are intended to be wearable miniature works of art.
