‘I am a potter living and working in Fife. I originally completed a degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing but after enrolling on a pottery course a number of years ago I became hooked. I love the immediacy of pottery. Marks made quickly, once fired, are preserved and can survive for thousands of years.
I like to decorate my thrown pots using a technique called sgraffito. The pots are dipped in a layer of contrasting coloured clay slip and a pattern is scratched through to reveal the colour beneath. I also hand build larger vessels which I finish by highly polishing the clay with the back of a spoon. These are then smoke fired in smouldering sawdust which results in a unique pattern made by the smoke. This contrasts with my other pieces as the marks made are partly down to chance.
I’m inspired predominantly by nature. Plants and birds provide a wealth of ideas with other influences coming from the simplicity of Scandinavian design and 50’s textiles.’
