Jen Hills graduated from Norwich School of Art and Design, (now Norwich University of the Arts) with a degree in Textiles (BA). She now embroiders by hand to illustrate tiny designs onto button sized pieces. Her knowledge of traditional hand embroidery techniques began from an early age by the skills passed down through generations of her family, and these stitches are used to illustrate contemporary design in her work.
Back stitch and french knots are used to stitch garden birds, town bicycles, and delicate meadow flowers on to plain fabrics, which are then sewn onto a complimentary or contrasting fabric to illustrate either the wall, road or field. The love hearts are a combination of appliqued fabrics and stitching on the raw edged heart. Each design is freely hand stitched on to cotton and then constructed into either brooches or magnets. As each piece is handmade, and the fabrics vary, no two are ever the same.
