Rhiannon Thomas

As a textile artist, I combine traditional craft techniques, such as basketry and braiding, with modern materials to produce 3D textiles. I manipulate materials such as wire and monofilament with colourful and tactile hand-dyed paper yarns to capture movement and shape in abstracted organic forms. Light plays an important role in all my work, in presentation, photography or to create an atmosphere.

I create sculptures using wire, cotton and paper yarn. They are displayed both in box frames and on small wooden plinths. My inspiration for both my sculptures and paintings is from nature and the techniques I use to create the sculptures. I use basketry and braiding techniques to manipulate the materials. Each material responds differently creating an exciting process and a lovely outcome.

Drawings and paintings play a large part in my work. They are used as a starting point but often continue to develop alongside the woven sculpture. I have a particular interest in botanical forms.

For me, craft is important because it provides a way to explore creative processes and material, while producing something beautiful, functional or communicative. I believe that it is important for our culture and our society to pass on traditional crafts and skills. I enjoy looking at other craft works and appreciating the skill and dedication that has gone into the piece.

I graduated from the University of Huddersfield in 2007 with Textile Crafts BA (Hons).
