Selina CampbellI aspire to create three-dimensional forms that capture the beauty of flora and fauna and explore all aspects of nature. I am greatly inspired by the spontaneous layered structures and geometric patterns displayed in nature. I construct single floral components that are then arranged to produce intriguing contemporary forms, reminiscent of growing plant life.
My designs are intended to evoke an appreciation of the pure aesthetic. The observer can decide the final use of each object; either decorative or functional in jewellery or tableware.
I mainly use are sterling silver and sheet acrylic. Whether I combine these materials or use each one alone is dependent upon the design. In order to create the best outcome, it is highly important to me to carefully consider the materials I intend to use. The combination of precious metal and acrylic in my designs is an integral part of each object.
I handmake the majority of my designs using techniques such as soldering, piercing, hand finishing and polishing. I try to keep the natural white appearance of the silver in contrast to the shiny, polished outline edge of each piece. This technique focuses the eye towards the delicate and distinct linear shapes and three-dimensional forms created.
I use traditional soldering techniques to assemble all my objects. I enjoy building each item piece by piece to create something unique; recreating spontaneous growing patterns found within the natural world.
I initially created each individual component by hand, but once the designs were developed I decided to cast each piece. This technique results in stronger component parts that help to bring strength to the centre of each object. I clean up each component to form jewellery and decorative vessels. My curved vessels are constructed over handmade ceramic moulds to give form and definition to the final pieces.
