Emily Richard

I studied at UCE School of Jewellery in Birmingham, England for four years, before becoming a jewellery teacher and designer maker. I work from my home town of Rugby, making small collections of quality, contemporary, design-led jewellery. I have received two Goldsmiths Craftsmanship and Design Award for Technological Innovation (one for my Torus brooches), five BJA Awards while at UCE, and won a national competition to design a range of jewellery for Moissanite. My work has been exhibited at IJL and Goldsmiths Hall, London in 2008 and 2009 and Spring Fair, Birmingham in 2007.

Through studying at the School of Jewellery I have put my passion for crafts into practice, as well as learning about new technologies that are now available to the industry. I am particularly enthusiastic about creating pieces of original yet wearable jewellery in precious metals.

Experimentation and learning are essential tools, and my work is constantly evolving as new techniques and ideas are introduced. I am drawn to clean lines and flowing forms, and my work is inspired by both organic elements and strong geometric shapes. Creating elegant patterns and shapes using simple components forms a large part of my work. My Torus Collection is inspired by mathematical models and is made from thin flat slices of metal, which slot together to form an intricate three-dimensional shape. I also enjoy colouring the surface of the metal to add contrast and interest to the pieces, the properties of which then change depending on the eye line of the viewer.

Jewellery is such an important aspect of many people's lives, and I feel proud to be able to create pieces that other people can not only enjoy looking at but also enjoy wearing.
