Alex R Alex R is an upcoming glass artist who has completed many commissions for a growing client base. From small glass vessels to large scale installations of glittering glass, intricate surfaces are the signature style of her work.
An alumna of Central Saint Martins' highly respected postgraduate course, Alex is a relative newcomer to the world of glass but is already gaining recognition from many quarters. In the year of her graduation, Alex won the Stevens Competition for Architectural Glass (2005) and was subsequently invited to create a glass installation for University College Hospital.
Her first public art commission coincided with Alex establishing her studio. She lives and works in a 1970s townhouse in leafy West Dulwich in south London. All her glasswork is handmade in her well-equipped studio which occupies the entire ground floor.
She has gone from strength to strength since setting up, working on glass projects for public and private clients. Her work was selected for the prestigious Glass Biennale (2006), while commissioned work was short-listed for the Art and Work Awards (2005) and won in two categories of the Pearson's Prize (2006) (Best Glass in Architectural Application, Best Glass in interiors). She was also short-listed for Most Promising Newcomer at Pulse 2007.
As well as making her own glass work, Alex teaches glassmaking privately from her studio. She also runs glassmaking classes at Brent Adult Education College and regularly teaches residential courses in kiln-formed glass at West Dean College in West Sussex.
